Important Notes on Preanalytics and Sample Handling

We can only influence the complex phase of preanalytics insofar as we provide you with the appropriate collection and shipping materials and supply you with relevant information. Proper sample handling during the preanalytical phase (e.g., blood collection technique, transport) significantly affects the reliability of laboratory analyses and thus plays a major role in quality assurance. Preanalytical errors are a common cause of clinically implausible findings and can lead to misinterpretations and inadequate treatment. Most disruptions can be avoided through correct sample collection, the proper choice of collection tubes, and the fastest possible sample transport. All analyses performed are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the German Medical Association (RiLiBÄK).

Since most of the control steps are beyond the laboratory’s influence, the most important aspects will be briefly addressed here.

The following information is intended to help minimize preanalytical errors and thus ensure reliable findings. Information on preanalytics can be found on our website under "Forms and Checklists." Further inquiries can be made by phone or via email through our contact form.

Before sample collection, the required collection tubes (paying attention to the expiration date!) should be prepared and labeled with the necessary data. To avoid errors in sample assignment and prevent mix-ups, it is essential to correctly and legibly label or barcode the collection tubes containing the test material—not the protective cover or the shipping bag!

Blood count and EliSpot/iSpot tubes must always be filled up to the designated mark due to the required mixing ratio, as the contained solution is provided in a specific volume.
